Operations FAQ
Why do aircraft need a tractor to move backward?
While jet engines can use reverse thrust to back up (a "powerback"), it is highly dangerous at the gate. It creates massive noise, risks blowing debris into terminal buildings, and can ingest foreign objects into the engine. Tractors provide safe, quiet, and precise maneuverability.
What is a shear pin?
On conventional towbars, shear bolts/pins are engineered weak points. If a tractor applies too much rotational or pulling force, the pin breaks cleanly, disconnecting the tractor before the expensive aircraft landing gear structure bends or breaks.
Are all GPUs 400Hz?
For commercial aviation, yes. The 400Hz standard allows transformers and electric motors inside the aircraft to be significantly smaller and lighter than standard 50/60Hz components, saving crucial flight weight.
How do you steer a towbarless tractor?
Towbarless tractors wrap around the nose gear and lift it. The operator then steers the tractor, and the aircraft nose gear rests in a turntable mechanism that freely rotates to prevent oversteering the aircraft's internal hydraulic steering limits.
What prevents cargo loaders from damaging the aircraft skin?
Loaders are equipped with proximity sensors and non-marring rubber bumpers. Operators are trained to leave a tiny gap between the loader bridge and the fuselage, known as "safe clearance."
