Cargo Loaders

The speed at which an aircraft can be turned around at the gate dictates airline profitability. Cargo loaders are the highly synchronized hydraulic platforms responsible for moving Unit Load Devices (ULDs) and bulk cargo from tarmac dollies into the aircraft belly holds.

Lower Lobe vs. Main Deck Loaders

Loaders are broadly categorized by their vertical reach and lifting capacity.

  • Lower Lobe Loaders: Designed for the under-belly compartments of passenger aircraft. Typically lifting 7,000 to 15,000 lbs, utilizing a dual-platform bridge and elevator system.
  • Main Deck Loaders: Used for freighter aircraft where cargo is loaded onto the passenger level. These massive units can lift upwards of 30,000 lbs to heights exceeding 18 feet.

Roller Systems and Helical Drives

Once a ULD is elevated, it must be moved horizontally into the hold. Loader platforms feature omni-directional roller decks. Motorized helical rollers (PDU - Power Drive Units) grip the flat bottom of aluminum ULDs, allowing operators to steer containers safely into the fuselage without manual pushing.
